My next adventure: taking my 2 dimensional drawing, carving it into a woodblock, turning it into a woodblock print, then taking it to another level; to a relief painting.
A fascinating process.

                  Woodblock carved ready for proof.

The beginning of the Relief Painting.

Next Step: Carving Continued.

I will be taking this on my trip to PA where I will enjoy an 'artist retreat'.  I will post as the process continues.

I will now declare this painting complete.

Liquid Silk Paint, Acrylic on carved wood
 by Randy Leibowitz Dean

It took some time to find the best lighting and background to photograph this painting.  The black background allowed the carving to show on the edges and the sun behind the cloud was perfect lighting.

I used Liquid silk dying paints on this piece.  I loved the way the paints seep into the wood grain.  I also used white acrylic paint mixed with mat medium.  The piece is mostly covered with clear Poly-Acrylic.  I felt some parts should have a mat finish so parts are covered with mat medium.

I took a painting I did in 2011-12 and carved it.  Then painted using acrylics.  I am happy with the outcome and have posted some detail photos so you can see the carving up close.

On my carving table today is my latest painting (not titled yet).  I have carved directly into the birch plywood.  We cut and mount the plywood so it is cradled, the 'frame' on the back.  I have also carved into the side of the piece.  I alternate with painting and carving and a bit of sanding.

Surprise, I am using dyes.  I love the way they soak into the wood where I do not add gesso.  I also use a watercolor gesso so the dyes act like watercolor only have permanence so I can varnish. On this piece I have added a bit of acrylic also.  I will add a video so you get an idea of the carving and the size.

Here is the painting on an easel.  To be continued.  I will post again when complete.

I like to post progress photos for some of my paintings.
I will start with my latest series of Carved Wood paintings.

I carve a piece of Basswood and attach to a Birch wood panel.

I begin painting and carving.  Also, in this case I have added gold leaf.

After many stages

the work is complete.  I will need to take photos of my work in different light so I can find a way for the gold leaf to show.
