NEW AND IMPROVED:

Randy Leibowitz Dean: My artistic process involves multiple layers of various woods (basswood, beach also birch and pine plywood). A carved, three-dimensional piece is added onto a two-dimensional surface, blended to create yet another dimension and a bit of surprise, or layering plywood in a way that can be carved with power tools and hand carving knives into a free standing sculpture. This process has evolved over the years, as result of my natural eagerness to experiment, combined with my innate intuition with respect to the wood. Composition, value and texture are a challenge with added surfaces and I enjoy being pushed in this direction. Another facet of my process is the painting. Carving and painting the many layers of plywood allows me to combine two techniques I enjoy. My background in painting on walls for murals and faux finishing, also the concentration of years of portrait work has given me the experience to put two disciplines together. The carving can be very delicate. After hours of heavy grinding and chiseling the painting can go from saturating with color to detail brush work. For me the art I create is an ever evolving, very physical, and deeply meditative process.
